Industrial washing machines use water, mechanical action and laundry chemicals to clean a wide range of textiles. They are commonly used in hotels, hospitals, factories, commercial laundries and other professional laundry facilities.
In general, an industrial washing machine consists of major components such as the machine body, washing drum, water supply and drainage system, heating system, drive system and electrical control system. 1. Three Basic Elements of the Washing Process
The washing process is based on the combined action of three key elements: mechanical action, laundry chemicals and water.
Mechanical Action
Mechanical action is created by the movement of the washing drum. During operation, the laundry is lifted, tumbled, dropped and continuously redistributed in the wash solution. These movements create friction, impact and compression between textile items, helping loosen and remove soil from the fabric surface and fibres.
This mechanism partly reproduces traditional hand-washing actions such as rubbing, beating and agitating, but performs them continuously and more consistently through the machine's drive system.
Laundry Chemicals
Laundry chemicals help weaken and break the bond between soil and textile fibres. Depending on the type of laundry, the level of soiling and hygiene requirements, different chemical products may be used during the washing process.
Chemical selection and dosing should be appropriate for the fabric type, water quality, washing temperature and wash program to achieve effective cleaning while minimizing unnecessary impact on textile durability.
Water
Water acts as the medium that dissolves and distributes laundry chemicals throughout the load. It also helps carry loosened soil away from the textiles and discharge it from the machine during the draining and rinsing stages.
Water quality and water volume have a direct impact on washing performance. Factors such as water hardness, temperature and the amount of water used during each wash stage should be properly controlled.
2. Basic Cleaning Principle of an Industrial Washing Machine
During the washing process, the motor drives the washing drum. Laundry inside the drum is continuously lifted by the lifters, then dropped and redistributed through the wash solution.
This movement creates several cleaning actions at the same time:
- Friction between textile items.
- Impact caused by continuous tumbling and dropping.
- Compression and expansion of textile structures.
- Penetration of water and wash solution into the fibres.
As a result, soil is gradually loosened from the textiles and transferred into the wash solution. After the main wash stage is completed, the soiled water is drained before the machine proceeds to the rinsing stages.
3. The Rinsing Process
After the main wash, the laundry must be rinsed to remove residual chemicals and loosened soil.
Depending on the wash program, rinsing can be carried out using different methods.
Rinsing by Water Replacement
Soiled water is drained from the machine before clean water is supplied for the next rinsing stage. This process may be repeated several times depending on the requirements of the wash program.
Continuous-Flow Rinsing
Clean water is continuously supplied during the rinsing process while water containing residual chemicals and soil is discharged. This method may require more water but provides continuous dilution of the remaining wash solution.
Rinsing Combined with Extraction
Some wash programs alternate between rinsing and extraction stages. Extraction helps remove part of the remaining water and chemicals from the textiles before fresh water is introduced for the next rinse.
4. The Role of Reversing Drum Rotation
During washing, the drum does not normally rotate continuously in only one direction. Instead, it operates in cycles of forward rotation, stopping, reverse rotation and stopping again.
Reversing drum rotation helps distribute the laundry more evenly, reduces excessive tangling and improves contact between the textiles, water and laundry chemicals.
Changing the direction of movement also creates additional mechanical action, contributing to more effective soil removal.
5. Cleaning Principle of Horizontal-Drum Washing Machines
In horizontal-drum washing machines, laundry is lifted by internal drum lifters. As the drum rotates, the laundry is carried upward and then falls back down under the force of gravity.
This process creates three main mechanical actions:
Rubbing and Friction
As the laundry is continuously redistributed inside the drum, textile items rub against one another and against the drum surface. This action helps loosen soil attached to the fibres.
Impact
The drum lifters carry the laundry upward before it falls back into the wash solution. This repeated movement creates an impact effect similar to the traditional action of beating garments during manual washing.
Compression
When laundry falls onto other textile items, the weight of the upper layers creates pressure on the lower layers. This repeated compression and deformation helps the wash solution penetrate the textile structure.
6. The Role of the Wash Program
Modern industrial washing machines are typically programmed to perform different stages such as water filling, heating, washing, rinsing and extraction.
However, an effective wash program should be developed based on several factors, including:
- Textile material.
- Type and level of soiling.
- Laundry load weight.
- Washing temperature.
- Water quality.
- Type and dosage of laundry chemicals.
- Hygiene requirements for each type of textile.
For this reason, different types of textiles should not necessarily be processed using the same wash program. Selecting appropriate parameters can improve cleaning performance, optimize water and energy consumption and help extend the service life of textiles.
7. Automation in Industrial Washing Machines
Industrial washing machines can be classified according to their level of automation.
With semi-automatic machines, certain stages may still require operator intervention. Fully automatic machines, on the other hand, can perform the programmed washing sequence from water filling and washing to rinsing and extraction.
A higher level of automation can help reduce manual handling, improve consistency between wash loads and provide better control over key operating parameters.
