Hospitals and healthcare facilities use large volumes of linen every day for patient care, medical treatment, surgery and internal operations.

Bed sheets, blankets, pillowcases, patient garments, staff uniforms, towels and other healthcare textiles must be managed throughout their entire lifecycle.

Unlike linen used in many other industries, healthcare linen may come into contact with blood, body fluids and other potentially infectious materials. For this reason, linen management must be organized as a controlled process from the point of use through collection, transportation, processing, cleaning, finishing, storage and redistribution.

Hospital Linen Management as Part of Healthcare Operations

Effective linen management involves more than simply collecting used linen and sending it to the laundry. The entire process should be organized with a clear operational flow to support infection control, reduce the risk of cross-contamination and maintain linen quality throughout its service life.

A hospital linen management process generally includes the following key stages:

1. Collection of Used Linen

After use, linen should be collected according to the procedures established by each hospital and handled appropriately based on its condition and level of contamination.

The collection process should minimize unnecessary handling that may spread dust or contaminants into the surrounding environment. Used linen should not be mixed with clean linen or stored in areas that are not designated for linen collection.

Collection carts, bags and containers should be suitable for the hospital's operating procedures and managed according to the facility's infection control requirements.

2. Linen Sorting

Sorting helps determine the appropriate processing method for different categories of linen. Depending on the procedures of each healthcare facility, linen may be sorted according to factors such as:

  • Type of linen and intended use.
  • Level of soiling.
  • Presence of blood, body fluids or other specific contaminants.
  • Area of use.
  • Fabric type and processing requirements.

Proper sorting supports more efficient processing and helps avoid applying the same washing method to textiles with different handling requirements.

3. Transportation to the Laundry

After collection, used linen is transported to the laundry area according to the established workflow.

When designing a hospital laundry, the separation and control of linen flow are important considerations. The movement of used linen and clean linen should be taken into account during layout planning and equipment selection to support the reduction of cross-contamination risks.

For large healthcare facilities, transportation systems, collection carts and staging areas should be planned based on actual linen volumes and required turnaround times.

4. Laundry Receiving and Handling

Once linen arrives at the laundry, the receiving process should follow the established operational flow.

In the used-linen handling area, textiles may be inspected, sorted and prepared for the washing process. Appropriate space planning and equipment selection can improve operator workflow and support better control of linen movement throughout the laundry.

5. Washing and Processing Healthcare Linen

Linen is processed using washing programs appropriate to the type of textile and the operational requirements of the healthcare facility.

Parameters such as processing time, temperature, water consumption and chemical dosing should be determined according to the linen category, level of soiling, equipment specifications and the infection control procedures applied by the hospital.

For healthcare laundry projects, washing equipment should also be selected based on operating capacity and required linen flow. Barrier washer extractors or other specialized equipment may be used in systems that require separation between the used-linen handling area and the clean-linen area.

6. Drying and Linen Finishing

After washing and water extraction, linen is transferred to drying or finishing processes depending on the type of textile.

Items such as towels and garments may be processed using industrial dryers. Bed sheets, pillowcases and other flat linen may be finished using industrial flatwork ironing equipment to support both surface finishing and higher processing productivity.

Equipment capacity should be planned as an integrated system to avoid bottlenecks where one stage has sufficient capacity but downstream processes cannot keep pace with the production flow.

7. Inspection and Sorting of Clean Linen

After processing and finishing, clean linen should be inspected before storage or distribution.

Items that do not meet the required quality standards may need to be reprocessed according to hospital procedures. Linen that meets the required standards can then be sorted and prepared for distribution to the relevant departments.

8. Storage of Clean Linen

Clean linen should be stored in an appropriate designated area before being distributed back to the relevant hospital departments.

The storage area should be organized to protect linen from dust, moisture and other factors that may affect quality. Proper inventory management also helps healthcare facilities maintain sufficient linen availability for daily operations.

9. Linen Distribution and Circulation

After finishing and storage, clean linen is distributed back to wards, departments and other areas of use.

Monitoring linen distribution, collection and inventory can help hospitals control the linen lifecycle, reduce unnecessary losses and identify replenishment requirements when needed.

Designing Linen Flow in a Hospital Laundry

One of the most important considerations when building or upgrading a hospital laundry is the organization of linen flow.

The operation should be viewed as a continuous process, from the point at which used linen is received through to the finishing and redistribution of clean linen.

Equipment selection, space planning and linen movement should be considered based on actual linen volume, available installation space, operating hours and the management requirements of each healthcare facility.
