Before investing in an industrial laundry, it is important to clearly identify the actual operational requirements, the type of customers to be served, the volume of laundry to be processed and the expected operating capacity. There is no single laundry model that is suitable for every application, as each facility may have different requirements regarding laundry volume, linen types, available space, operating hours, energy sources and investment budget.
Laundry planning should therefore be approached as an integrated process. Selecting suitable equipment without considering utilities such as electricity, water, fuel supply, drainage and operating costs may lead to additional investment costs and operational difficulties later.
1. Selecting a Heating Energy Source
Three common heating energy sources used in industrial laundries are electricity, gas and steam generated by a boiler. The appropriate choice depends on several factors, including the location of the laundry, operating capacity, fuel availability, existing infrastructure and local energy costs.
Each energy source has its own advantages and limitations, so it should be carefully evaluated before investment in order to avoid unnecessary costs and achieve suitable long-term operating efficiency.
Electric heating is relatively easy to install and operate, while maintenance requirements are generally straightforward. It also does not produce combustion emissions at the point of use. However, operating costs may be higher depending on electricity prices and operating hours. Electric heating may be suitable for smaller laundries or locations where gas and steam systems are not practical.
Gas heating offers relatively fast heating and may provide reasonable operating costs depending on local fuel prices. Gas can be used with equipment such as industrial dryers and flatwork ironers. However, installation areas must provide adequate ventilation and comply with applicable safety and fire prevention requirements.
Steam heating supplied by a boiler is generally suitable for larger laundries with continuous or high heating demand. Steam can be used in several laundry processes, including washing, drying and ironing. However, the initial investment for the boiler and supporting systems can be significant, and appropriate installation space and operating conditions are required.
For this reason, the selection of a heating source should not be based solely on the initial investment cost. Laundry processing requirements, operating hours and long-term energy costs should also be considered.

2. Selecting the Number and Capacity of Laundry Machines
Before selecting the number and capacity of machines, it is necessary to identify the type of customers and applications the laundry will serve, such as households, factories, hotels, resorts or hospitals. The volume of laundry, linen types, operating hours and required turnaround time should also be considered.
Equipment capacity should not be determined solely by the total amount of laundry processed per day. Operating hours, the number of working shifts and the volume that must be processed within specific periods should also be evaluated. These factors help determine the appropriate number and capacity of machines.
The installation location of the equipment should also be considered in advance. Machines installed on the ground floor, in a basement or on upper floors may require different considerations regarding floor structure, load-bearing capacity and equipment access.
The number and capacity of dryers should be determined based on the selected washing equipment. Dryer capacity should match the laundry volume, linen types, residual moisture after extraction and the required processing time. If the capacity of one process does not match the others, it may become a bottleneck and affect the productivity of the entire laundry.
For laundries serving hotels, hospitals or facilities processing large quantities of flatwork, flatwork finishing equipment may also be required. Equipment selection should take into account linen dimensions, required capacity and the capability of the overall processing line.
In addition to the main equipment such as washing machines, dryers and flatwork ironers, other equipment may be required depending on the application. These may include dry-cleaning machines, press irons, form finishers, spot-removing equipment, marking equipment and other supporting machinery.
Future expansion should also be considered during the planning stage. Allowing sufficient space and infrastructure for additional equipment can make future capacity expansion easier and reduce the need for major changes to the facility.
3. Laundry Operating Costs
Operating costs are one of the factors that directly affect the efficiency of a laundry investment. Therefore, equipment should not be selected solely based on its purchase price. The costs associated with operating the equipment should also be considered.
Major operating costs typically include electricity, fuel, water, laundry chemicals, labour, equipment maintenance and wastewater treatment. For laundries using boilers, the operating and maintenance costs of the boiler system should also be included in the overall calculation.
Water quality should also be assessed before the laundry begins operation. Water quality can affect washing performance, chemical consumption and equipment operation. Where hard water or other unsuitable water conditions are present, an appropriate water treatment solution may need to be considered.
The more accurately operating costs are evaluated based on actual conditions, the better prepared the investor will be to assess the expected performance of the laundry and select an appropriate investment solution.
4. Equipment Layout, Laundry Space and Working Conditions
Based on the available facility, the equipment layout should support the actual laundry workflow. An unsuitable layout may increase the distance required to transport linen, create unnecessary waiting time and make the work more difficult for operators.
When planning the layout, the linen processing sequence should be considered, from receiving and sorting through washing, extraction, drying, ironing and final finishing. Each process should have sufficient space for operators and linen handling.
In addition to the equipment footprint, the facility should also provide space for linen storage, equipment maintenance and access for servicing and repairs.
Working conditions such as ventilation, lighting, water supply, drainage and occupational safety should be considered from the planning stage. The supporting infrastructure should be capable of meeting the operating requirements of the entire laundry.
The points discussed above represent some of the basic considerations before investing in an industrial laundry. To select a suitable solution, investors should clearly evaluate actual processing requirements, required capacity, available space, energy sources and investment budget.
