What Is a Continuous Tunnel Washer?

A Continuous Tunnel Washer (CTW), also known as a tunnel washer, is an industrial laundry system designed to process textiles continuously through multiple interconnected washing chambers.

Unlike conventional batch washer-extractors, where textiles are loaded, washed and unloaded as separate batches, a continuous tunnel washer divides the washing process into a series of connected stages. Textiles enter the system, move sequentially through the chambers and continue to the following processing stages.

This configuration is particularly suitable for industrial laundries that require high-volume textile processing and integration with other laundry equipment.

How Does a Continuous Tunnel Washer Work?

A tunnel washer is basically divided into multiple washing chambers. Each chamber performs part of the washing process and can be configured according to textile type, soil level and the required treatment process.

Textiles are loaded into the system and transferred sequentially through the chambers. During the process, textiles are exposed to a combination of water, chemicals, temperature and mechanical action to achieve the required cleaning results.

Once one stage is completed, the textiles are transferred to the next chamber until the washing process is finished.

Why Does a Tunnel Washer Use Multiple Chambers?

Dividing the washing system into multiple chambers allows the overall process to be organized into separate stages rather than carrying out the entire washing cycle in a single chamber.

Depending on the system configuration, these stages may include wetting, main washing, intensive treatment, rinsing and other processes before the textiles move to the following stage.

This configuration provides greater control over the washing process and allows different programs to be developed for different textile types and soil levels.

Two Textile Transfer Principles in Continuous Tunnel Washers

An important aspect of tunnel washer design is the method used to transfer textiles between washing chambers. Lavatec systems include two transfer principles known as Bottom Transfer (BT) and Center Transfer (CT).

Bottom Transfer – Transfer at the Bottom of the Chamber

With the Bottom Transfer design, textiles are transferred from one washing chamber to the next through the bottom section of the chamber.

This configuration creates a large washing movement and supports interaction between textiles, water and the washing chamber. The bottom transfer principle is also designed to optimize textile movement during the washing process.

Center Transfer – Transfer at the Center of the Chamber

With the Center Transfer design, textiles are transferred between chambers through the central section of the washing chamber. The rotary movement creates continuous interaction between water, textiles and the washing drum.

This transfer principle can be considered for washing processes requiring stronger mechanical action during cleaning.

When Should a Continuous Tunnel Washer Be Used?

A continuous tunnel washer is generally considered for industrial laundries with high textile volumes, stable washing processes and a need to organize multiple treatment stages into a continuous production flow.

The technology can be suitable for laundries serving hotels, resorts, hospitals, healthcare facilities, factories and commercial laundry operations requiring high-volume textile processing.

For smaller facilities, operations handling highly varied textile loads or businesses requiring frequent changes between washing requirements, batch washer-extractors may provide greater flexibility.

Continuous Tunnel Washers in an Industrial Laundry Line

A tunnel washer normally forms part of a complete textile processing line rather than operating as a standalone machine. Depending on the size and requirements of the project, the line may include loading, continuous washing, water extraction, drying, ironing, folding and textile finishing equipment.

For this reason, selecting a continuous tunnel washer should be considered as part of the complete laundry process. Textile volume, textile types, soil levels, available space, water supply, heating systems, chemical dosing and downstream equipment all need to be considered when designing the system.
