How to Choose the Right Capacity for an Industrial Washing Machine?

When investing in an industrial washing machine, the question is not simply how many kilograms the machine can wash. More importantly, the machine capacity must match the actual volume of laundry that needs to be processed each day. An undersized machine may require too many washing cycles and extend processing time, while an oversized machine that is rarely fully utilized can increase investment costs and reduce operating efficiency.

Therefore, industrial washing machine capacity should be determined based on the actual requirements of each laundry operation rather than a single fixed load size.

Understanding Industrial Washing Machine Capacity

In industrial laundry operations, machine capacity generally refers to the amount of dry laundry that can be processed in one washing cycle, usually measured in kilograms (kg).

Industrial washing machines are available in different load capacities, from smaller models for small and medium-sized laundry operations to high-capacity machines designed for hotels, hospitals, factories, commercial laundries and centralized laundry facilities.

When selecting equipment, it is also important to distinguish between washing capacity and energy consumption. Washing capacity indicates how much laundry the machine can process in one cycle, while electrical or heating power relates to the energy required during operation.

Factors That Determine the Required Washing Machine Capacity

1. Daily Laundry Volume

The first factor to determine is the total amount of laundry that needs to be processed each day. This may include textiles from hotels, hospitals, restaurants, factories or commercial laundry customers.

A laundry handling several hundred kilograms per day will have very different equipment requirements from a facility processing several tons. Capacity should therefore be calculated based on overall daily demand and long-term operating requirements.

2. Operating Hours and Washing Cycles

The same daily laundry volume may require different machine capacities depending on the available operating hours.

If a laundry facility has limited operating time and must process a large volume within a short period, an appropriately sized machine can reduce the number of washing cycles and shorten processing time. If operating hours are longer, the same volume can be distributed across more cycles.

For this reason, businesses should calculate the required load per cycle and the expected number of cycles per day before selecting machine capacity.

3. Types of Laundry

Different textile types do not have the same weight and volume. Bed linen, towels, uniforms, workwear and other specialized textiles may require different load considerations.

The selected capacity should therefore reflect the types of textiles regularly processed while remaining within the manufacturer's recommended operating load.

4. Installation Space and Supporting Systems

An industrial washing machine is part of a complete laundry system. In addition to the machine dimensions, businesses need to consider space for receiving, sorting, washing, drying, finishing and storing clean textiles.

The machine capacity is also related to supporting utilities such as water supply, drainage, electricity, steam or other heating sources depending on the selected configuration. Equipment selection should therefore be coordinated with the technical infrastructure of the laundry.

Selecting Industrial Washing Machine Capacity by Laundry Scale

There is no single capacity suitable for every laundry facility. Capacity can be considered according to the scale of operation:

  • Small laundry operations: medium-capacity machines may be suitable for daily laundry requirements without requiring excessive washing cycles.
  • Hotels, restaurants and service facilities: capacity should be calculated based on the number of rooms, textile volume and daily linen replacement frequency.
  • Hospitals and healthcare facilities: in addition to capacity, equipment configuration and the separation of soiled and clean textile flows should be considered according to infection-control requirements.
  • Large commercial and industrial laundries: the total processing capacity of the laundry system should be calculated rather than focusing on a single machine, ensuring that production volume and delivery schedules can be maintained.

Why the Largest Machine Is Not Always the Best Choice

A common mistake when investing in industrial washing equipment is assuming that a larger capacity is always better. In reality, laundry efficiency depends on the balance between machine capacity, actual laundry volume, number of cycles, operating hours and supporting equipment.

If the actual laundry volume is significantly lower than the machine's rated capacity, the equipment may not be utilized efficiently. On the other hand, consistently overloading a machine can affect washing performance and equipment durability.

The objective is therefore not to choose the largest industrial washing machine, but to select the capacity that best matches the actual processing requirements.

Calculate the Overall Requirements Before Investing

To select the right capacity, businesses should begin with actual operating data: total daily laundry volume, average load per cycle, operating hours, working days per week and potential future growth.

Based on these factors, the required number of machines, individual load capacities and overall system configuration can be determined. This approach helps avoid unnecessary investment while maintaining sufficient processing capacity as laundry volume increases.

For an industrial laundry, equipment selection is therefore not simply a matter of choosing a machine with a certain kilogram capacity. It is an overall calculation involving processing capacity, laundry workflow, technical infrastructure and operating efficiency.
